Stephen Henderson, neurosurgeon, head of his department at a medical school and hospital, driving on the way home after a late night visit to the hospital, is abducted by visitors from a planet in a universe parallel to ours.

Henderson is sure this is a lot of nonsense. UFO, extraterrestrial abduction - these things can't and don't happen! He learns from his captor, however, a man named Zingli, that he has been abducted so that he can perform an operation on a critically ill powerful political leader.

Henderson performs the operation, successfully, but unexpectedly the success leads him into a situation where his life and return to Earth are threatened.  The assistant surgeon at the operation, Alene Vengil, a beautiful woman, finds Henderson very attractive. His temptation regarding her, while his wife and children, who he dearly loves, are back on Earth, leads to additional complicatons.

With Alene's support Henderson escapes from Zingli's hold and is returned to Earth, where he realizes that he was away in outer space, and that others are "out there."  After reading On the Way Home, we may be as convinced as he is.
